Ryan sent this over a few weeks ago and it got lost in the shuffle. Sorry, LotB.

He says the piece took around five hours and the lucky client flew all the way in from Seattle. Gorgeous piece; as always Ryan’s lines are impeccable.

Tattooist Lyle Tuttle once commented that as a highschool dropout, he probably knew more about mythology than the average college professor; that if a client loves a Cerebus enough to get the image permanently tattooed on them they’re going to want to share every detail about it’s origins with the artist.

Efix Roy’s always stellar Buddhist cuttings trend the same way for me; when he has a new work I invariably find myself researching the origins of the image to find out more about it.

The Kamakura Buddhaa is a large scale statue of the Amitābha Buddha that resides in the Kanagawa Prefecture of Japan. Amitābha is the Buddha of Comprehensive Love. Without today’s cutting… I wouldn’t have had to go to wikipedia and I wouldn’t have learned something new.

The moral of the story is… Efix Roy makes you smarter.

Fresh and healed work by Keylan Liveane. He says that the healed cherry/plum blossoms are between three and four years old.

I don’t remember if I posted about this last year, but here is some scar work I did on a young, Native American girl. In her Blackfoot tribe it is customary to have a line scarred around their arm for each year they’re alive. It is known aswhich literally translates to “the rings of a tree”. When they run out of room on one arm they move to the other, then the legs, but apparently their average life expectancy is only 43.

Anyhow, her parents are more modernized now and didn’t want her having this done while she was growing up. She was intrigued by her grandfather’s rings, which covered his arms and legs, so decided to come to me from Montana to catch up. Last year I worked on her upper arm and finished it up this time. She’s 24 now.

The Imperial Stormtrooper is the everyman of the Empire. His armor is weak (see Ewoks killing Troopers with rocks in Jedi) and he probably doesn’t get paid. But he still goes out there as cannon fodder to get done what needs done.

Scarwars is just a name. No George Lucas overtones here. This isn’t the Stormtrooper you’re looking for.

Cutting by Brian Decker at the Philadelphia Tattoo Convention

I’ve previously compared my love of Efix Roy to my love of poutine; today I’ll compare it to the love I have for feeling a big ol’ fighting bass on the end of my fishing line. So when you combine the two- Efix and fishing- you know you’re on to something good.

This piece combines line cutting and cross hatch “shading”. The purple is from the stencil and wil eventually wear off.

More hybrids?
My friend Pat in Montreal (who’s making his debut on the Scarblog with this post) sent this over last night; a koi fish cutting/flesh removal/branding. Great line work here with a really good design courtesy of Patrick Morency.

The “original” Scarwars piece, done at Modcon4 in Toronto, was a hybrid of styles. Cutting, Branding and Flesh Removal done by several rotating artists. (If memory serves it was Brian Decker, Blair and Ryan Ouellette) I have a feeling that we’re going to be seeing a lot more hybrid work soon.

Sri Ganesha is one of the most worshiped of the Vedic Deities. The remover of obstacles and the Lord of Beginnings, He is usually represented as a male with the head of an elephant. I prefer his Heramba-Ganapati incarnation with five heads.
