It’s impossible to tell how a cutting/branding will heal; I’ve said it before, but it seems to be combination of skill, aftercare, genetics and more than a little bit of luck.
Sylvia had a very simple strike branding done several years ago by my old friend Blair.
The branding was expertly done; Sylvia followed the aftercare to the letter. But genetics and luck stepped in and she continued forming scar tissue well past the desired result. After the break there are sequential photos (one that’s not work safe) of the scar’s progress.

Fresh branding. The line width is probably around 3/16″ or so- maybe slightly larger. The branding was done with multiple strikes of heated stainless steel. The heat disperses quickly after each strike- a design like this is made up of multiple quick hits with the white hot metal.

The scar tissue has increased making the lines approximately 3/8″-1/2″.
Genetics (Sylvia is of Korean descent) can contribute to more prominent scarring as can the location (between the breasts would cause pulling on the healing scar) of the brand itself. All factors considered, similar conditions could have led to perfectly defined scars. Clients should be aware that there’s never a guarantee of “perfect” results.

Even more growth on the scar tissue. (paired with two fresh scalpel cuttings by Brian Decker)
Sylvia is working on getting us a recent photograph to show it’s current size/shape.
Von Faust – those small scars are from a chest suspension.

Are the scars around the branding from prior surface piercings?
I *might* be seeing Sylvia this weekend; if so I’ll take updated pics. If not she’s promised to take a fresh pic. She’s also been cut by John Joyce since that last picture was taken, so we’ll get that in the shot as well. Her healing on the cut pieces is fairly typical of a cutting… no massive accumulations of scar tissue.
I’m curious about how the healed cuttings compared to the branding. I hope you can get these pictures as well.
